ITR Filing Deadline Extended to December 10 for AY 2025–26

New Delhi, 29th Oct: The Income Tax Department has extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2025–26, providing relief to companies and taxpayers whose accounts require auditing. The new filing deadline is December 10, 2025, replacing the earlier cut-off of October 31, 2025.
In a statement issued today, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) also announced that the due date for submitting audit reports has been extended by one month, from October 31 to November 10, 2025.
Under existing provisions of the Income Tax Act, companies, partnership firms, and proprietorships that require audited accounts were earlier required to file returns by October 31. The latest decision comes after the department received representations from industry bodies and professional associations, highlighting difficulties caused by floods and natural calamities in several states that affected compliance timelines.
For individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), the deadline had previously been extended from July 31 to September 16, by which time 7.54 crore returns had been filed, and 1.28 crore taxpayers paid self-assessment tax.
The department’s move aims to ease the compliance burden and ensure that taxpayers facing genuine hardships are not penalized due to unavoidable delays.
