Ernakulam, 24th Oct: President Droupadi Murmu attended the centenary celebrations of St. Teresa’s College in Ernakulam today, praising the institution for its century-long commitment to women’s education and nation-building.

Highlighting the role of Kerala women in shaping India, President Murmu recalled the contributions of Ammu Swaminathan, Annie Mascarene, and Dakshayani Velayudan in the Constituent Assembly, and noted milestones such as Justice Anna Chandy becoming the first female High Court Judge in 1956 and Justice M. Fathima Beevi’s Supreme Court appointment in 1989.

President Murmu emphasized that the active participation of women is vital for India to leverage its demographic dividend. She cited the four-and-a-half-fold increase in Gender Budget allocations over the past decade, the near doubling of women-led MSMEs between 2011 and 2024, and the vision of achieving 70% women workforce participation as a key pillar for Viksit Bharat by 2047.

She also lauded St. Teresa’s College’s SLATE project—promoting Sustainability, Leadership, and Agency through Education—as aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, preparing students for Sustainable Development Goals and future employment opportunities.

President Murmu concluded that institutions like St. Teresa’s College play a critical role in shaping India as a knowledge super-power.
