New Delhi, 19th Oct: Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh will pay homage to the martyrs on Police Commemoration Day at the National Police Memorial (NPM) in New Delhi on Tuesday, 21st October 2025. The annual observance honours the courage and sacrifice of India’s police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

Police Commemoration Day marks the sacrifice of ten valiant Policemen, who were ambushed and killed by heavily armed Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh, on October 21, 1959. Since then, the day has been observed every year across the country to remember the supreme sacrifice of police personnel who safeguard the nation’s security and integrity.

In recognition of their service, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the National Police Memorial to the nation on Police Commemoration Day in 2018. Located at Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, the Memorial serves as a symbol of national pride and unity, instilling a sense of identity and purpose among police forces. It comprises a 30-foot-high granite cenotaph, the ‘Wall of Valour’ — engraved with the names of martyrs — and a museum showcasing the rich history and evolution of policing in India.

The main ceremony at the NPM will be presided over by the Raksha Mantri, who will pay homage to the martyrs and address the gathering, recalling their valour and highlighting the evolving challenges of modern policing. A joint parade of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Delhi Police will be held, followed by the laying of wreaths by Shri Rajnath Singh, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Members of Parliament with police backgrounds, and senior officials from CAPFs and Central Police Organisations (CPOs).

The solemn event will conclude with the Raksha Mantri laying a wreath at the altar dedicated to the martyrs of Hot Springs, honouring their selfless devotion to duty. The ceremony will be telecast live on Doordarshan, webcast on police websites, and covered by AIR and major media outlets.

As part of the commemorative week, CAPFs and CPOs will organise a series of remembrance activities from October 22 to 30, including visits by families of martyrs, band displays, motorcycle rallies, Run for Martyrs, blood donation camps, essay and painting competitions, and film screenings showcasing the bravery and service of police personnel.

The National Police Memorial remains open to the public on all days except Mondays. Every weekend, CAPFs conduct band displays, parades, and retreat ceremonies at sunset, providing citizens an opportunity to witness the discipline and dedication of India’s police forces.

Through these commemorations, the nation reaffirms its deep gratitude to the men and women in uniform who continue to uphold peace and security — living by the ethos of service, sacrifice, and honour.
