Singapore, 17th Oct: A month after the tragic death of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) has stated that it does not suspect any foul play, even as investigations continue under the country’s Coroners Act 2010.
In an official statement, the SPF urged the public not to circulate unverified claims about the incident. “The Singapore Police Force is aware of speculation and false information circulating online regarding the circumstances of Mr. Zubeen Garg’s death. Based on preliminary investigations, the SPF does not suspect foul play,” the statement read.
The police confirmed that the investigation may take up to three more months, after which the findings will be presented to the State Coroner, who will determine whether a Coroner’s Inquiry should be held. “The inquiry, led by a Judicial Officer, will establish the cause and circumstances of death, and its findings will be made public,” the SPF added.
Authorities also revealed that a copy of the autopsy report and preliminary findings were shared with the High Commission of India in Singapore on October 1 at their request.
Zubeen Garg, aged 52, was found dead on September 19, a day before he was set to perform at the North East India Festival in Singapore. He had reportedly gone swimming in the sea before being discovered floating face down. Following his death, the festival was cancelled.
In connection with the case, Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma and NEIF chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta have been arrested. Meanwhile, the Assam government has set up a 10-member committee to probe the matter and has decided to seek a fast-track trial.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “The cabinet has decided to request the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court for the trial in the Zubeen Garg case to be conducted in a fast-track court. The state will appoint a special public prosecutor for the case.”
Officials confirmed that a team led by Special DGP and SIT head Munna Prasad Gupta will meet Singapore police officials on October 21 to review the investigation’s progress.
