Mumbai, 9th Oct: Prime Minister Narendra Modi described India-United Kingdom ties as “on the move” and “filled with great vigour” while sharing a photograph with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during his two-day visit to India.
The picture was taken ahead of the leaders’ attendance at the Global Fintech Fest 2025 in Mumbai. This marks Starmer’s first official trip to India since taking office in July 2024. Leading a trade mission of over 100 business, academic, and cultural delegates, Starmer urged swift implementation of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), signed in July 2025, describing it as “the most ambitious trade deal India has ever done.” Negotiations for the free trade agreement began in January 2022.
In addition to trade discussions, a landmark defence deal was announced. Under the agreement, the UK will supply India with lightweight multirole missiles worth approximately $468 million, to be manufactured in Northern Ireland, strengthening security and defence cooperation.
On the first day of his visit, Starmer also lit diyas in Mumbai, a gesture resonating with the approaching Diwali festivities.
The visit underscores India-UK cooperation across trade, defence, fintech, and cultural ties, reflecting a renewed momentum in bilateral relations.
