Rohtak, 3rd Oct: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah inaugurated the Sabar Dairy Plant in Rohtak, Haryana, on Friday, in the presence of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and other dignitaries. Built at a cost of ₹350 crore, the plant is the country’s largest facility for producing curd, yogurt, buttermilk, and sweets.
Addressing the event, Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has fulfilled the decades-old demand of farmers by establishing the Ministry of Cooperation, which has laid a strong foundation for the cooperative movement. He expressed confidence that by 2029, every panchayat in India will have a cooperative society.
The Sabar Dairy Plant, an extension of Gujarat’s Sabarkantha cooperative model, will produce 150 metric tonnes of curd, 10 metric tonnes of yogurt, 3 lakh liters of buttermilk, and 10,000 kilograms of sweets daily. Shah said the plant would serve Delhi-NCR’s dairy demand while bringing prosperity to farmers across Haryana and adjoining states.
Highlighting the sector’s rapid growth, Shah said India’s dairy industry has expanded by 70 per cent under Modi’s leadership, making it the fastest-growing in the world. Milk production has risen from 146 million tonnes in 2014–15 to 239 million tonnes today, while per capita availability has increased from 124 grams to 471 grams. Nearly 8 crore farmers are now engaged in the dairy sector.
Shah noted that India’s milk processing capacity of 66 million liters per day will be scaled up to 100 million liters by 2028–29 under White Revolution 2.0, with more than 75,000 new dairy societies to be established. He also outlined government initiatives such as the National Gokul Mission, National Artificial Insemination Program, and Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund to boost the sector further.
The minister added that India is moving towards self-reliance in dairy plant construction and R&D by tripling the pace of expansion, ensuring benefits reach farmers, especially women engaged in milk production.
