Jharsuguda, 27th Sept: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated India’s first fully indigenous 4G stack and one lakh BSNL towers from Jharsuguda, Odisha, declaring it a milestone in self-reliance and digital empowerment.
Speaking virtually from Assam, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia hailed the achievement as “a moment of pride for the entire nation,” noting that India now ranks among only five countries to have built a 4G stack from scratch. “This indigenous stack sends a message to the world: India is not only a service provider but also a technology producer,” he said.
The ₹37,000 crore rollout covers 97,500 towers, with 92,633 already operational, delivering high-speed internet to over two crore citizens and connecting nearly 30,000 previously unserved villages. BSNL’s network is 5G-ready and cloud-based, designed to benefit students, farmers, patients, and the armed forces.
The Digital Bharat Nidhi scheme has so far activated 19,823 of 27,106 targeted towers, bringing connectivity to 26,327 villages and 20 lakh households in aspirational districts, border areas, and the North-East. Data use in August crossed 42,000 TB, averaging 21 GB per user.

Scindia credited Prime Minister Modi’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision for guiding BSNL to develop the stack within 22 months. Subscriber numbers have risen from 78 lakh in April 2024 to 2.2 crore, with consecutive quarterly profits, signaling BSNL’s turnaround.
Leaders across states, including chief ministers and union ministers from Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Assam, Gujarat, and Bihar, joined the nationwide launch.
“This is India’s moment to shine as a product nation,” Scindia said, adding that the indigenous 4G technology will strengthen India’s position in 5G and 6G development and open opportunities for global export, reinforcing the country’s vision of a secure and Viksit Bharat by 2047.
