Guwahati, 27th Sept: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the mysterious death of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has summoned Shyamkanu Mahanta, organiser of the Northeast India Festival in Singapore, and Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sarma to appear by October 6, sources told NDTV.

Garg, 52, drowned during a yacht excursion in Singapore on September 19, after going for a swim and being found floating face down. Bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, who accompanied him, has already been questioned. The SIT has also issued notices to about a dozen others from Assam who were on the yacht.

Investigators on Friday conducted back-to-back raids at Mahanta’s residence, registering a case under multiple sections, including criminal conspiracy. Protests have erupted across Assam, demanding immediate arrests and a transparent probe.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured citizens that “no one will be spared,” and on Thursday publicly distanced the state from Mahanta’s events. “Shyamkanu Mahanta’s programmes are not associated with Assamese culture, and that’s why I never attended them,” Sarma said, adding that the government will withhold all funding for his shows.

The SIT has directed all summoned individuals to join the investigation in Guwahati by October 6.
