Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Gen Z’ Remark in Vote Theft Campaign Draws Political Fire

GG News Bureau

New Delhi, 19th Sept: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi escalated his campaign against what he calls “vote theft” on Thursday, vowing that India’s youth, students, and notably “Gen Z” would safeguard the Constitution and democracy. While his remarks reinforced his alignment with young voters, the invocation of “Gen Z” — a generation that recently spearheaded protests in Nepal leading to the downfall of its government — has triggered political debate.

In a post on X, Mr. Gandhi declared: “The students and youth of India will save the Constitution, protect democracy, and stop vote theft. I stand with them, and with Gen Z, who represent the voice of truth.”

Nepal Link Sparks Controversy

The reference to Gen Z raised eyebrows across the political spectrum, given the comparison to Nepal, where protests that began over restrictions on social media evolved into a full-blown movement against corruption. Those demonstrations toppled the KP Sharma Oli government, paving the way for Sushila Karki, a former Supreme Court judge known for her uncompromising stance on corruption, to take charge as interim Prime Minister.

Critics argue that invoking Nepal’s political upheaval could be interpreted as encouraging disruptive movements at home. BJP leaders have wasted no time accusing Rahul Gandhi of attempting to sow unrest by drawing parallels between India’s electoral politics and protests in neighboring countries.

Renewed Allegations of Vote Manipulation

Rahul Gandhi has been doubling down on his claims that the ruling NDA, in collusion with the Election Commission of India (ECI), has been involved in large-scale voter list manipulation. Presenting a PowerPoint report earlier today, he alleged that over 6,000 voter names were targeted for deletion in Karnataka’s Aland constituency ahead of the 2023 assembly elections.

While the ECI acknowledged that 6,018 deletion requests were received, it clarified that most were rejected and only 24 were accepted. The poll body also underlined that the Congress had won the Aland seat, and an FIR was lodged in 2023 to probe the fraudulent applications.

BJP Hits Back Strongly

The ruling BJP dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s statements as baseless and politically motivated. Union Minister Anurag Thakur ridiculed the Congress leader, saying, “He has lost 90 per cent of elections under his leadership. His frustration is showing. Courts have repeatedly reprimanded him, but making false allegations has become his habit.”

Echoing the criticism, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale accused Mr. Gandhi of misleading the public. “Rahul Gandhi is lying when he says vote theft happens. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has won three consecutive terms. If Mr. Gandhi believes elections are rigged, why doesn’t he file a formal complaint instead of crying foul in public rallies?”

Political Stakes Rising

Rahul Gandhi’s renewed offensive underscores the Congress party’s strategy of framing the BJP as complicit in undermining democratic institutions. By targeting the Election Commission and invoking global democratic struggles, Gandhi is betting on galvanizing young voters, especially first-time voters and Gen Z, to challenge the ruling party’s dominance.

As the election season heats up, the controversy over Gandhi’s “Gen Z” reference is likely to provide the BJP with fresh ammunition while also helping the Congress leader sustain his campaign narrative around democracy and accountability.
