Patna, 19th Sept: The newly constituted Bihar Pradesh Congress Election Committee held its first meeting at the state party headquarters on Friday, where a key decision was taken unanimously — the responsibility of final candidate selection for the upcoming elections will rest with the party high command in Delhi.
A Unified Stand on Candidate Selection
Senior Congress leaders and members of the newly formed election committee gathered at Sadaqat Ashram, the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee (BPCC) headquarters, to deliberate on election strategies. After detailed discussions, the committee resolved that while local leaders would provide recommendations, the final say on ticket distribution would remain with the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
Party insiders say this move aims to ensure both discipline within the state unit and alignment with the Congress’s central strategy for Bihar, especially with the political landscape heating up ahead of the assembly elections.
Significance of the Decision
The decision is being seen as a step to avoid factional disputes within the Bihar Congress. Over the years, internal disagreements during candidate selection have weakened the party’s performance. By entrusting the high command with the authority, the state unit appears keen on presenting a united front.
A senior BPCC leader remarked, “The central leadership will ensure that candidates are selected based on merit, winnability, and wider party strategy. Our job is to strengthen the campaign and take Congress’s message to the people of Bihar.”
Bihar Congress at a Crossroads
The Congress has been attempting to revive its presence in Bihar’s political arena, where regional heavyweights like JD(U), RJD, and BJP dominate the landscape. The party, which once enjoyed a strong base in the state, has seen its electoral graph decline over the decades.
Analysts note that the upcoming elections will be crucial for Congress, as it seeks to regain ground by leveraging alliances and positioning itself as a credible alternative. By centralizing candidate selection, the party hopes to project unity and discipline.
Focus on Election Preparedness
Sources revealed that the committee also discussed campaign strategies, outreach programs, and coordination with potential allies. Special emphasis was placed on mobilizing youth and grassroots workers, ensuring the Congress message reaches every constituency.
The BPCC leadership reiterated its commitment to strengthening the party’s organizational network at the block and district levels in the months leading up to the polls.
What Lies Ahead
With the Bihar Pradesh Election Committee now deferring candidate selection to the AICC, the focus shifts to Delhi, where the Congress high command will carefully weigh caste equations, regional dynamics, and winnability before finalizing names.
Political observers believe this strategy could help the party avoid internal dissent, though the challenge will remain in energizing its base and countering well-entrenched rivals in the state.
For the Congress, Bihar’s elections are not just about numbers in the assembly but also about re-establishing relevance in one of India’s most politically significant states.
