New Delhi, 12th Sept: Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan on Friday took oath as the 15th Vice President of India at a ceremonial function in Rashtrapati Bhawan. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath in the presence of senior ministers, former Presidents and Vice Presidents, and key political leaders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Vice Presidents Jagdeep Dhankhar and Venkaiah Naidu, former President Ram Nath Kovind, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu were among the dignitaries present.

Radhakrishnan, the NDA nominee, was elected on September 9 with 452 votes against Opposition candidate and former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy, who secured 300. The election recorded a turnout of 98.2 per cent, with speculation of cross-voting after the NDA candidate received 14 votes more than expected.

Prime Minister Modi congratulated Radhakrishnan on X, expressing confidence that he would “strengthen our Constitutional values and enhance Parliamentary discourse.”

Radhakrishnan succeeds Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down on July 21 citing medical reasons, well before his term’s scheduled end in August 2027.
