Amritsar, 4th Sept: Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, on Thursday visited Punjab’s flood-hit regions, assuring affected farmers that the Centre would extend all possible help.
Chouhan toured Ghonewal village (Amritsar district), Begowal (Kapurthala), Dharamkot Randhawa, and Behrampur (Gurdaspur district), where he directly interacted with farmers, listened to their grievances, and inspected the devastated crop fields submerged under floodwaters since August 26.
Speaking at the site, Chouhan described the situation as “very grim and dreadful”, noting that over 1,400 villages had been severely impacted. “The crops have been completely destroyed, and the crisis now extends to the next sowing season. It’s heartbreaking to see fields covered in silt instead of soil. But my farmer brothers and sisters should not worry—the government will stand with them and ensure complete relief,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria handed over a detailed flood impact report to the Union Minister at Amritsar airport.
Chouhan informed that, on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s instructions, two high-level Central teams comprising officers from the Ministries of Agriculture, Rural Development, Roads, Energy, Finance, and Jal Shakti have been sent to Punjab. These teams will conduct on-ground assessments, interact with affected farmers, and prepare a report for the Centre. The state government will also carry out its own evaluation.

Reassuring Punjab’s farmers, Chouhan said: “Punjab has always stood as the shield of the nation. In this crisis, the Centre stands firmly with Punjab, with our farmer brothers and sisters, and with its people. We will not let farmers face this disaster alone.”
