New Delhi, 3rd Sept: The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved a ₹1,500 crore Incentive Scheme to strengthen India’s capacity to recycle battery waste and e-waste for extracting critical minerals. The move is part of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) and aims to secure domestic supply chains while reducing dependence on imports.
The scheme, with a six-year tenure from FY 2025-26 to FY 2030-31, will support both large recyclers and start-ups by offering capex and opex subsidies for new plants, expansions, and modernization.
Officials said the initiative will develop at least 270 kilo tonnes of annual recycling capacity, yielding around 40 kilo tonnes of critical mineral output, attract ₹8,000 crore investment, and generate nearly 70,000 jobs.
Union ministers described the decision as a step toward creating a circular economy and enhancing India’s preparedness for future industrial demand, especially in electric mobility and renewable energy.
