Aizawl/Imphal, 2nd Sept: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Mizoram and Manipur on September 13, officials in Aizawl said on Monday. The visit will begin in Mizoram, where he is scheduled to inaugurate the 51.38 km-long Bairabi-Sairang railway line, a flagship project under the Centre’s Act East Policy aimed at boosting connectivity and economic growth across the Northeast.
The new railway line will link Mizoram’s capital Aizawl with the rest of India through Assam’s Silchar, improving accessibility, trade, and mobility in the region.
After concluding his programme in Mizoram, PM Modi is expected to fly to Manipur, marking his first visit to the state since ethnic violence broke out in May 2023. However, while Mizoram officials confirmed preparations are underway, authorities in Imphal stated they have not yet received official confirmation of the Prime Minister’s visit.
Mizoram Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena chaired a high-level review meeting on Monday with senior officials and law enforcement agencies to finalise security, traffic control, and public reception plans. Arrangements are also being made for participation from government employees, farmers, and students at the inauguration ceremony in Lammaul, Aizawl.
PM Modi’s potential stop in Manipur carries significant weight amid ongoing ethnic tensions. The state has been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025, following the resignation of former CM N Biren Singh. The violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities since May 2023 has claimed at least 60 lives, destroyed property, and displaced thousands. The Assembly remains under suspended animation until its tenure ends in 2027.
