New Delhi, 1st Sept: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday spoke to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann soon after his return from a four-day visit to Japan and China, assuring him of all possible assistance to tackle the worsening flood situation in the state.

Government officials said PM Modi assured the Punjab government of immediate support after CM Mann, in a letter, described the floods as one of the worst disasters in decades, impacting nearly 1,000 villages.

Punjab has been battered by swollen rivers — Sutlej, Beas, Ravi — and seasonal rivulets following heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. Officials confirmed that 29 lives have been lost, and over 2.56 lakh people across 12 districts including Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Tarn Taran, and Fazilka have been affected.

Earlier, PM Modi concluded a high-profile foreign tour, attending the SCO Summit in Tianjin, China, where he held bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Before that, he visited Tokyo for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. Calling the visit “productive,” PM Modi said India’s stance on key global issues was strongly put forward.
