Jammu, 1st Sept: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, on Monday visited rain, flood, and landslide-affected areas of Jammu division, meeting displaced families and inspecting damages to the Tawi Bridge, Shiv Mandir, and nearby homes. He assured that the Modi government “stands firmly with the people of Jammu & Kashmir” and is committed to providing immediate relief, financial aid, and technical support.
Chairing a high-level review meeting with J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and senior officials, Shah expressed grief over the loss of lives and underlined the need for better disaster preparedness. “A critical review of the GLOF Early Warning System and other early warning apps is vital to move towards a zero-casualty approach,” he said.
Shah directed the Meteorological Department and NDMA to study cloudburst patterns using data analytics and AI for improved prediction. He added that survey teams from the Ministry of Home Affairs would soon assess damages, with more assistance to follow.
Highlighting relief measures, Shah said ₹209 crore has already been allocated under SDRF, over 80% of electricity supply restored, water and health services are running, and road repairs are underway. More than 5,000 people were evacuated as a precaution, supported by 17 NDRF teams, 23 Army columns, and IAF helicopters.
He also asked the Food Corporation of India to ensure ration supplies, including offline delivery if connectivity remains affected. Shah lauded coordinated rescue efforts and assured quick compensation for damaged homes.
“Despite severe challenges, timely action by all agencies minimized loss of life. Relief and rehabilitation are underway at war footing,” Shah said, emphasizing long-term resilience for J&K’s disaster-prone areas.
