Mysuru, 1st Sept: President of India, Droupadi Murmu, today graced the diamond jubilee celebrations of the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) at Mysuru, Karnataka, urging greater innovation, compassion and policy focus in addressing speech and hearing challenges.

Addressing the gathering, the President stressed that speech and hearing issues, like other health concerns, demand early identification and expert intervention. She called for a sympathetic and cooperative social attitude towards those affected and praised AIISH for playing a crucial role in diagnosis, treatment and awareness.

President Murmu pointed to initiatives like the ‘Inclusive Therapy Park’ for children with communication disorders and ‘AIISH Arogya Vani’ for raising awareness, calling them role models for India and abroad. She also underscored the institute’s role in contributing to national policy-making on communication disorders.

Highlighting the importance of technology, the President said the development and manufacturing of devices such as cochlear implants in India is vital to making them affordable. She urged AIISH to promote research, innovation and collaboration with top institutions to ensure that those with speech and hearing impairment can live normal, productive lives and contribute meaningfully to society and the economy.

The President lauded government efforts like the ‘Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan’, aimed at creating barrier-free environments for divyangjan. She noted that making public spaces and services more accessible not only offers convenience but also reinforces society’s care and respect for differently-abled citizens.

During her visit, President Murmu also interacted with divyang children undergoing treatment at AIISH, as well as those who have successfully overcome challenges with the institute’s support.
