Modi invites Xi Jinping to BRICS Summit in India next year

WASHINGTON – Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday thanked PM Modi for the invitation and offered China’s support to India BRICS Presidency, according to media reports.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to visit India next year. During their bilateral meeting in Tianjin, Modi invited Xi to attend the BRICS Summit 2026, MEA stated

“Prime Minister expressed support for China’s Presidency of the SCO and the Summit in Tianjin.

He invited President Xi to the BRICS Summit that India will be hosting in 2026. President Xi thanked Prime Minister for the invitation and offered China’s support to India’s BRICS Presidency,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.

Both leaders reviewed the progress of India-China bilateral relations since their meeting in Kazan last year.

Modi, who is in China after a gap of 7 years to attend the SCO Summit, reaffirmed that the two countries were development partners and not rivals, and that their differences should not turn into disputes.

He underlined the importance of peace and tranquillity on the border areas for continued development of bilateral relations, the MEA said.

Modi had a meeting with Cai Qi, Member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China.

If the visit materializes, this will be Xi’s first trip to India since 2019.

Xi visited India in October 2019 for the 2nd Informal Summit.
