Patna, 29th Aug: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has strongly condemned the violence that broke out outside the Congress headquarters in Patna, Bihar, following a BJP protest over alleged derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his family.
In a symbolic post on social media, Gandhi declared: “सत्य और अहिंसा के आगे असत्य और हिंसा टिक ही नहीं सकते। मारो और तोड़ो, जितना मारना-तोड़ना है – हम सत्य और संविधान की रक्षा करते रहेंगे। सत्यमेव जयते।” (Truth and non-violence can never be defeated by lies and violence. No matter how much you attack and vandalize, we will continue to uphold the truth and the Constitution. Truth alone triumphs.)
The controversy
The row erupted during the Congress-led Voter Adhikar Yatra in Darbhanga, where a Youth Congress speaker allegedly used abusive language against PM Modi and his late mother. Though the main organiser, Mohammad Naushad, apologised and clarified his absence during the incident, the BJP demanded an unconditional apology from the Congress.
Escalation in Patna
On Friday, BJP workers staged a protest outside the Congress office in Patna. Eyewitnesses and viral videos showed violent scenes of stone-pelting, flag-tearing, and property vandalism. The clashes quickly spiralled into chaos, leaving several injured.
BJP leader Nitin Nabin said the party would give a “befitting reply” to what he called an insult to the Prime Minister’s family. Following a complaint, police arrested the accused, Rafeeq alias Raja, who allegedly made the remarks.
BJP, JD(U) hit out at Congress
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda condemned the Congress, calling it a “new low” under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership. Shah also demanded an apology from Congress’s Bihar ally, the RJD.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar echoed the criticism, saying: “The use of indecent language against PM Narendra Modi Ji and his late mother during the Voter Adhikar Yatra is extremely unbecoming.”
Congress hits back
The Congress accused the BJP of using violence and intimidation to silence the opposition. “The BJP cannot tolerate any campaign that empowers voters or questions their policies. This violence is part of their strategy to derail our democratic efforts,” a party spokesperson said.
