Tokyo, 29th Aug: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba on Friday attended the India-Japan Economic Forum in Tokyo, jointly organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Keidanren [Japan Business Federation]. Top industry leaders and CEOs from both nations participated in the high-level meeting.

In his address, PM Modi lauded the success of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, particularly in investment, manufacturing, and technology. He invited Japanese companies to scale up their footprint in India, stressing that the country’s growth story offers “exciting opportunities” for trusted partners like Japan.

Highlighting India’s political stability, policy predictability, and reform-driven approach, Modi said these factors have boosted investor confidence, as reflected in the recent credit rating upgrade by global agencies.

The Prime Minister outlined five priority areas for stronger collaboration:

  • Manufacturing – batteries, robotics, semiconductors, shipbuilding, and nuclear energy.
  • Technology & Innovation – AI, quantum computing, space, and biotech.
  • Green Energy Transition.
  • Next-Gen Infrastructure – mobility, high-speed rail, logistics.
  • Skill Development & People-to-People Ties.

He underlined that India contributes nearly 18% to global growth and is poised to become the world’s third-largest economy in the coming years.

Japanese PM Ishiba echoed the sentiment, noting the eagerness of Japanese firms to leverage Indian talent alongside Japanese technology for resilient supply chains. He identified three focus areas for cooperation: fusion of technology and green markets, strengthening people-to-people partnerships, and critical high-tech sectors such as semiconductors.

The co-chairs of the India-Japan Business Leaders’ Forum (IJBLF) presented their 12th report, with JETRO Chairman Norihiko Ishiguro announcing a series of B2B MoUs across steel, AI, space, education, clean energy, and human resource exchange.
