New Delhi, 22nd Aug: The Supreme Court on Friday ruled that Bihar voters excluded from the electoral roll during the recent ‘special intensive revision’ can use Aadhaar as proof of residence for re-inclusion applications. The Election Commission had earlier permitted 11 forms of identification, and Aadhaar will now be added to this list.

The directive comes ahead of the crucial state elections later this year and is expected to ease the process for lakhs of disenfranchised voters.

During the hearing, the court criticized Bihar’s political parties for failing to assist the over 65 lakh voters who were deleted from the rolls. “Political parties are not doing their jobs,” the bench remarked, noting that objections were filed mostly by individual MPs and MLAs rather than by political outfits.

The petitions had alleged that the voter list revision was politically motivated and designed to exclude certain communities. The court’s order is likely to have a major impact on the upcoming polls.
