Guwahati, 21st Aug: The Rajya Sabha on Monday passed the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, paving the way for the establishment of a new IIM in Guwahati, Assam with an outlay of ₹550 crore. The bill, which was cleared by the Lok Sabha last week, now awaits Presidential assent to become law.
Introducing the bill, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the new IIM would be the 21st in the country and the second in the Northeast, after IIM Shillong. He added that nine IIMs have been set up during the past 10 years of the Modi government.
Pradhan credited Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for strongly pursuing the proposal with the Centre. He stressed that the institution would not only enhance higher education opportunities in the region but also create new avenues for entrepreneurship and innovation.
The minister underlined that IIM Guwahati will cater to the growing demand for management professionals in the Northeast and help in building future business leaders with global competence.
The passage of the bill was marked by a brief uproar, with members of the Opposition staging a walkout during its introduction. However, the House later passed the legislation by a voice vote.
With this, IIM Guwahati is set to emerge as a key hub of management education, further strengthening the government’s push to expand premier institutions in underserved regions.
