New Delhi, 21st Aug: The Monsoon Session of Parliament will be remembered for disruption rather than debate, as continuous uproar and sloganeering dominated both Houses. According to government sources, the Opposition’s “obstinate behaviour” came at a cost, with several crucial bills passed without their meaningful participation.
The Opposition’s protests centered on issues they claimed the government was blocking debate on, including communal clashes, unemployment, and the alleged misuse of central agencies. In the Rajya Sabha, MPs repeatedly entered the Well of the House, demanding a discussion and a statement from the Prime Minister.
Despite the protests, the government insisted that legislative business could not be stalled and accused the Opposition of “deliberate obstruction.” As a result, several key bills were passed. These included legislation related to merchant shipping, taxation laws, mining, ports, sports governance, and online gaming.
Both the government and the opposition blamed each other for the lack of debate. Government sources said that Parliament “cannot be held hostage to Opposition politics,” while Opposition leaders countered that the government “bulldozed Bills without discussion.”
