New Delhi, 20th Aug: C.P. Radhakrishnan, the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) candidate for the Vice President of India, filed his nomination papers on Wednesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was among the proposers, was present during the filing, along with a show of strength from senior NDA leaders including Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and BJP President J.P. Nadda.
The election is being held following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar and is considered significant for the politics of the Rajya Sabha. The Vice President is the second-highest constitutional position in the country, with a term of five years.
According to Article 66 of the Constitution, the Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of all elected and nominated members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. The election is conducted via a secret ballot, and the winning candidate must secure more than 50% of the total valid votes.
The NDA is currently trying to ensure a unanimous election for its candidate. In line with this strategy, senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh is actively reaching out to opposition parties.
