Bengaluru, 14th Aug: Kannada actor Darshan has been arrested by the Bengaluru Police hours after the Supreme Court cancelled the bail granted to him in the murder case of his fan, Renukaswamy. His alleged partner and co-accused, Pavithra Gowda, was also arrested.
A Supreme Court bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan set aside the Karnataka High Court’s bail order, calling it a “manifest perversity” and a “mechanical exercise.” The bench stated that Darshan’s celebrity status could not be a “shield for impunity” and warned against special treatment, emphasizing that “no man is above the law.”
The chargesheet in the case alleges that 33-year-old Renukaswamy was abducted from Chitradurga and brutally tortured in a shed in Bengaluru over obscene messages he sent to Ms. Gowda. The document revealed 39 injury marks on the victim’s body, including broken chest bones and a deep cut on his head. The body was later thrown into a drain.
Darshan, who returned to Bengaluru after being informed of the bail cancellation, was taken into custody from his wife’s residence. After a medical check-up, he and Pavithra Gowda will be produced before a court.
