WASHINGTON – India External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Wednesday announced that he is expected to visit Russia later this month after trade tensions with the US over Russian oil purchase.
According to reports, Jaishankar will hold talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on August 21.
Both leaders are likely to discuss bilateral ties and issues of mutual interest, media reported.
US President Donald Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on India 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs and a 25 per cent penalty for buying Russian oil.
India said that it imports oil from Russia, keeping in mind the energy needs of 140 crore Indians, and called out Washington for its own trade with Russia.
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
Doval was in Russia to discuss cooperation between India and Russia in multilateral formats, also held talks with the Secretary of the Russian Security Council, Sergey Shoigu.
Doval had announced that the dates of Russian President Putin’s visit to India have been finalized.
