New Delhi, 8th Aug: The government on Friday informed the Lok Sabha that more than two lakh Indians renounced their citizenship in 2024. This marks the third consecutive year that the number of individuals giving up Indian citizenship has exceeded the two lakh mark.

Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh provided the data in a written response to a query from Congress MP K.C. Venugopal. He stated that the number of Indians who gave up their citizenship was 2,06,378 in 2024. The data for the preceding years was also provided: 2,16,219 in 2023, 2,25,620 in 2022, 1,63,370 in 2021, and 85,256 in 2020.

The government’s official position, as articulated by the MoS, is that the reasons for renouncing citizenship are personal and known only to the individual. He emphasized that the government recognizes the potential of the Indian diaspora in the global workplace.

Singh highlighted that a “successful, prosperous and influential diaspora is an asset for India,” and the government’s efforts are aimed at harnessing their potential to its fullest through engagement, sharing of knowledge, and expertise.

In response to a separate query, the government also shared that the total population of overseas Indians stands at 3,43,56,193. This number is composed of 1,71,81,071 Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and 1,71,75,122 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
