Bengaluru, 3rd Aug: In a landmark verdict, a special court for MPs/MLAs in Bengaluru sentenced former MP Prajwal Revanna to life imprisonment until death in a rape case, imposing a total fine of Rs 11.60 lakh. The judgment was hailed by Special Investigation Team (SIT) Chief BK Singh, who praised the victim’s resilience against the powerful political figure.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Singh, who led the probe into the obscene video and rape cases, stated that there were “repeated attempts at every stage to delay or obstruct the verdict.” However, he added, “Despite all efforts, it was not possible to delay the judgment.”
Singh commended the victim, a woman from a “poor socio-economic background,” for her unwavering pursuit of justice against the politically and economically powerful accused, who is the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda. “The victim… stood firm with us for one year. She was the reason we achieved this conviction,” Singh said, adding that he hopes the judgment “will bring hope and peace to many victims in society.”
The court found Prajwal Revanna guilty under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code and the IT Act, with the conviction carrying a fine of Rs 11.60 lakh. Of this amount, the court has directed that Rs 11.25 lakh be paid to the victim as compensation. The conviction was secured in the KR Nagar case, one of six cases filed against the former MP.
Singh also commended his investigation team, which was primarily composed of women officers, for their professional and scientific approach. “From arrest to trial, they were the flag bearers of this case,” he said.
Out of the six cases against Revanna, one has been decided with this verdict. In another, the trial has already begun, while a third is at the charge-framing stage. Two cases are before a lower court, and one remains under investigation. Special Public Prosecutors stated that the maximum punishment imposed by the court sends a strong message to those who believe their position can shield them from the law.
