New Delhi, 31st July: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid his humble tribute to Shaheed Udham Singh, referring to him as an “immortal son of Mother India,” on his martyrdom day.

In a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister wrote in Hindi, which translates to: “My humble tribute to Shaheed Udham Singh, the immortal son of Mother India, on his martyrdom day. The saga of his patriotism and bravery will always remain a source of inspiration for the countrymen.”

Shaheed Udham Singh, a revolutionary from Punjab, is revered for his act of assassinating Michael O’Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, in London on March 13, 1940. This act was in retaliation for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar on April 13, 1919, where O’Dwyer had approved the indiscriminate firing on a peaceful gathering. Udham Singh was subsequently tried and hanged on July 31, 1940. His martyrdom day is observed annually to commemorate his sacrifice for India’s freedom.
