Guwahati, 30th July: Assamese actor Nandini Kashyap, known for her recent box office success in the movie ‘Rudra’, has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run case in Guwahati that resulted in the death of a 21-year-old student. The arrest came after Samiul Haque, the victim, succumbed to his injuries in the hospital last night.
The hit-and-run incident took place in Guwahati’s Dakhingaon locality around 3 am on July 25. The victim, Samiul Haque, a student at Nalbari Polytechnic who worked part-time for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), was reportedly returning home after working on a light project when he was struck by a speeding Scorpio. CCTV footage allegedly showed the SUV, believed to be driven by Kashyap, running him over. Eyewitnesses stated that the actor fled the scene without stopping to render aid.
Haque’s colleagues, who reportedly chased the vehicle after the incident, later traced it to an apartment in Kahilipara, where Kashyap allegedly attempted to conceal her SUV. Viral videos subsequently captured a heated confrontation between the colleagues and the actor. Initially, police had seized Kashyap’s car and questioned her, but she had denied her involvement in the case.
Jayanta Sarathi Borah, DCP (Traffic), Guwahati Police, confirmed the arrest to reporters today. “We arrested actor Nandini Kashyap today in the hit-and-run case. Earlier, we had only questioned her since the case was initially filed under bailable sections. However, last evening, the victim died due to his injuries. So we added charges of culpable homicide amounting to murder, which is non-bailable. We have arrested her and will produce her in a local court,” Borah stated.
Samiul Haque came from a financially modest background and was reportedly funding his education through his part-time job at the GMC. His family members stated that he suffered severe head injuries, multiple fractures in both legs, and broken bones in his thigh and arm. He was first admitted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital before being transferred to a private hospital, where he passed away in the ICU late Tuesday evening. Haque’s family also alleged that Kashyap had initially promised to cover his medical treatment expenses but never followed through.
