New Delhi, 23rd July: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid rich tributes to the revered revolutionary freedom fighter, Chandra Shekhar Azad, on the occasion of his birth anniversary.
In a post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister lauded Azad, stating, “Tributes to Chandra Shekhar Azad on his birth anniversary. He epitomised unparalleled valour and grit.”
PM Modi further emphasized Azad’s enduring legacy, adding, “His role in India’s quest for freedom is deeply valued and motivates our youth to stand up for what is just, with courage and conviction.”
Chandra Shekhar Azad, born on July 23, 1906, in Bhabhra village (now Azad Nagar) in Madhya Pradesh, was a fearless revolutionary who dedicated his life to India’s independence from British rule. From a young age, he was influenced by the injustices of British rule and was particularly impacted by the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. He famously adopted the name “Azad” (meaning free) after declaring it as his name when arrested as a teenager.
A prominent figure in the Hindustan Republican Association (later Hindustan Socialist Republican Association), Azad played a crucial role alongside leaders like Bhagat Singh, Ram Prasad Bismil, and Rajguru. He was involved in key revolutionary activities such as the Kakori Train Robbery (1925) and the assassination of British officer J.P. Saunders (1928) to avenge Lala Lajpat Rai’s death. Azad was known for his tactical brain, discipline, and commitment to armed resistance.
