Over two inspiring days, June 25 and 26, 2025, I had the privilege of participating in the Viksit Bharat 2047 event, engaging with members of the Indian Scottish diaspora and distinguished guests from India at the Scottish Parliament and addressing attendees at Edinburgh City Chambers. This event, focused on the role of the diaspora in supporting India’s ambitious Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, was a powerful reminder of the deep and evolving ties between Scotland and India.
Scotland and India share a rich, multifaceted history. Centuries of connections through trade, education, and migration have shaped our relationship. While some early ties were rooted in the colonial era, today’s partnership is built on mutual respect, shared values, and dynamic cooperation. From thriving trade to significant investments—India ranks among Scotland’s top inward investors—our nations are collaborating in exciting ways across technology, energy, life sciences, and education.
The Indian community in Scotland is at the heart of this relationship. Your contributions in healthcare, business, culture, and academia enrich our society and strengthen our national story. At the Edinburgh City Chambers, I was honored to address a gathering of community leaders, professionals, and guests from India, all united by a shared commitment to progress.
The Viksit Bharat 2047 vision is an inspiring roadmap for India to become a fully developed nation by the 100th anniversary of its independence. Its emphasis on empowering youth, women, farmers, and the poorest in society reflects a commitment to inclusive growth. The discussions over these two days underscored the diaspora’s vital role in building bridges between Scotland and India, fostering collaboration, and supporting this transformative vision.
It was heartening to hear diverse perspectives on how the Indian Scottish diaspora can contribute to both Scotland’s future and India’s journey toward 2047. The energy and ideas shared during the event highlighted the strength of our shared ambitions.
I am deeply grateful to all who attended and contributed to these meaningful discussions. Your presence and insights demonstrate the active, forward-looking partnership between our nations. Together, we can continue to build a future that reflects our shared values and aspirations.
