New Delhi, 19th July: What was initially reported as an accidental electrocution in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar has turned into a shocking murder case, leading to the arrest of the victim’s wife and his paternal cousin. The unraveling of the plot came after an incriminating Instagram chat between the duo was discovered.
The victim, 36-year-old Karan Dev, was pronounced dead at a hospital in West Delhi’s Janakpuri area on the morning of July 13. At the time, his wife, Sushmita, claimed he had suffered an accidental electric shock at their home. Despite the family’s initial reluctance for an autopsy, police insisted given Dev’s young age and the unusual circumstances. His body was then sent for post-mortem at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.
Days later, on July 16, the investigation took a dramatic turn when Karan’s younger brother, Kunal Dev, recovered a damning Instagram conversation between Sushmita and Rahul – Karan’s cousin. The chat explicitly detailed the murder plot. Kunal preserved the conversation on video and immediately submitted it to the police.
The Chilling Chat and Confession
The retrieved messages reveal a chilling exchange from the night of July 12. The accused had reportedly mixed 15 sleeping pills into Karan’s food. When the sedatives didn’t take immediate effect, Sushmita’s anxiety grew. Her messages to Rahul included: “Check once how long it does it takes to die after taking the medicine. It’s been three hours since he ate food. No vomiting, no potty, nothing. And no death yet either. Then what should we do, suggest something.”
Rahul’s chilling reply was, “If you can’t figure anything out, give him a shock.” The conversation continued with Sushmita inquiring, “How to tie him up for the shock?” and Rahul advising, “With tape.” As Karan’s breathing reportedly slowed, Sushmita further wrote, “Give him all the medicine you have,” and later, “I can’t get his mouth open. I can pour water in, but I can’t give the medicine. You come here, maybe together we can manage to feed it to him.”
According to the police, the accused planned to make Karan’s death appear accidental via electrocution after sedating him. When the pills failed to induce immediate unconsciousness, they allegedly decided to administer an electric shock, reportedly to his finger, while he was still under sedation, hoping to blame it on a household electrical accident.
Following the murder, Sushmita reportedly rushed to her in-laws’ nearby residence, informing them of an electric shock. Karan was then taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead. Initially, Karan’s father and Rahul strongly objected to a post-mortem, but police proceeded due to procedural norms.
The case officially became a murder investigation on July 16 after Kunal submitted the chat evidence and formally accused his sister-in-law and cousin. An FIR was registered, and both suspects have reportedly confessed during interrogation. Police sources indicate Sushmita confessed to Karan having slapped and abused her previously, and frequently demanding money.
