New Delhi, 16th July: In a major push to reform agriculture and boost rural livelihoods, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana — a comprehensive, six-year initiative starting from 2025–26 to strengthen agricultural and allied activities across 100 districts.
Drawing inspiration from the Aspirational District Programme of NITI Aayog, this first-of-its-kind scheme will exclusively focus on agriculture and allied sectors by targeting districts that lag in key indicators such as agricultural productivity, cropping intensity, and credit disbursement.
Features of the Scheme:
- Duration: 2025–26 to 2030–31
- Coverage: 100 districts (minimum one per state/UT)
- Focus Areas: Crop diversification, natural farming, post-harvest storage, improved irrigation, and agricultural credit
- Implementation: Through convergence of 36 ongoing schemes under 11 departments, in collaboration with state governments and private partners
- Monitoring: Real-time dashboard tracking 117 key performance indicators; monthly reviews by Central Nodal Officers and NITI Aayog
Each targeted district will prepare a District Agriculture and Allied Activities Plan under the District Dhan-Dhaanya Samiti, which will include progressive farmers. These district-specific plans will align with national goals of water and soil conservation, increased crop productivity, and expansion of organic and natural farming.
The government believes that as outcomes in these 100 districts improve, they will significantly raise national averages and accelerate India’s journey toward Atmanirbhar Krishi (self-reliant agriculture).
