New Delhi, 14th July: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran film actress B. Saroja Devi, calling her an “exemplary icon of Indian cinema and culture” whose legacy transcends generations.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister wrote:

“Saddened by the passing of the noted film personality, B. Saroja Devi Ji. She will be remembered as an exemplary icon of Indian cinema and culture. Her diverse performances left an indelible mark across generations. Her works, spanning different languages and covering diverse themes, highlighted her versatile nature. My condolences to her family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

B. Saroja Devi, one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated actresses, starred in over 180 films across Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi cinema. Known for her commanding screen presence and emotional depth, she earned the title of “Abinaya Saraswathi” and was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1992.

Her decades-long career shaped the golden era of South Indian cinema, with landmark roles in films such as Kalyana Parisu, Sri Krishnadevaraya, Sasural, and Anuradha. She worked alongside legendary actors like M.G. Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, N.T. Rama Rao, Raj Kapoor, and Dr. Rajkumar.

The Prime Minister’s message comes amid an outpouring of grief from across the film industry and fans nationwide, who remember her not only for her artistic excellence but also for her dignified public life.
