Kolkata, 12th July: Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta has issued a strong statement affirming its zero-tolerance policy towards sexual violence after a woman alleged she was raped by a student inside a boys’ hostel on the institute’s campus on Friday.
According to police, the woman, who is not a student of IIM Calcutta, filed an FIR at Haridevpur police station claiming she was called to the hostel for a counselling session, where she was served a drink allegedly laced with drugs. She later woke up and realised she had been sexually assaulted. The FIR also states the accused threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed the incident.
The accused student has been arrested and is currently in police custody as the investigation continues.
In a statement issued Saturday, IIM Calcutta’s Director-in-Charge Professor Saibal Chattopadhyay said, “The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta has zero tolerance for such incidents and remains steadfast in upholding a safe and respectful campus environment.”
He added that the institution is fully cooperating with law enforcement agencies and is taking all necessary steps to support the investigation while adhering to internal protocols.
“The administration has been made aware of a serious complaint involving one of our students. The matter is being treated with the utmost seriousness,” Chattopadhyay stated. “We urge everyone to avoid speculation or dissemination of unverified information, which may hamper the investigation.”
This incident comes just two weeks after a separate alleged gang-rape case was reported at a law college in Kolkata, prompting renewed concerns over campus safety in the city.
IIM Calcutta has said it will refrain from further comment while the legal process is ongoing but assured that it will monitor the situation closely and take appropriate action in line with the law and institutional policies.
