Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday met with President of Ghana, Dr. John Dramani Mahama, during his landmark State Visit—the first by an Indian Prime Minister to the West African nation in over three decades. The two leaders held comprehensive discussions and agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Partnership.

Prime Minister Modi was welcomed with full ceremonial honours at Jubilee House in Accra. The two leaders first held a restricted meeting followed by delegation-level talks, covering a broad spectrum of cooperation—from trade and investment to defence and development partnerships.

They reaffirmed the strong and historic ties between India and Ghana and discussed expanding collaboration in key sectors such as agriculture, capacity building, digital technology, infrastructure, and people-to-people relations. President Mahama acknowledged India’s growing investments in Ghana, while Prime Minister Modi praised the country’s commitment to democratic values and regional leadership.

The two sides also agreed to enhance cooperation in defence and security, as well as increase support for India-backed infrastructure and skill development projects in Ghana. India offered its expertise in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, UPI-based digital infrastructure, and traditional medicine.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized India’s role in voicing concerns of the Global South and thanked Ghana for its consistent solidarity, including its response to the recent Pahalgam terror attack. Both leaders pledged to strengthen the global fight against terrorism and reiterated their shared vision for democratic values, sustainable development, and global peace.

In a strong signal of deepening institutional ties, the two countries exchanged four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in the fields of:

  • Culture
  • Standards
  • Ayurveda and Traditional Medicine
  • Joint Commission Mechanism between Foreign Ministries

President Mahama hosted a State Banquet in Prime Minister Modi’s honour, following the talks. Prime Minister Modi, in turn, invited President Mahama to visit India at a mutually convenient time, expressing gratitude for the warm hospitality and support extended to the 15,000-strong Indian diaspora living in Ghana.
