Nizamabad, 29th June: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah inaugurated the headquarters of the National Turmeric Board in Nizamabad on Saturday, marking what he described as the fulfilment of a 40-year-old demand of turmeric farmers, particularly in Telangana.
Addressing the gathering, Shah said the establishment of the Board is a result of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise to millions of turmeric growers across the country. “Nizamabad has long been known as the turmeric capital, yet its farmers were deprived of access to global markets. This will change now,” he said, adding that within 3–4 years, turmeric from the region will be exported worldwide.
The event was also attended by Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy, Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar, and other dignitaries.
Shah assured that the Board would eliminate middlemen and create a comprehensive ecosystem for packaging, branding, marketing, and exporting turmeric. He highlighted turmeric’s medicinal value, calling it a “wonder drug” for its anti-viral, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory properties.

India has set an ambitious target of achieving $1 billion in turmeric exports by 2030, with all preparatory measures underway, Shah said. The National Turmeric Board will also train farmers to meet international standards, support GI-tagged organic turmeric production, and promote research on its health benefits.
In 2025, farmers received ₹18,000–₹19,000 per quintal for turmeric. Shah said the government aims to increase this by ₹6,000–₹7,000 over the next three years. In 2023–24, turmeric was cultivated on 3 lakh hectares, yielding 10.74 lakh tonnes across India.
Shah also highlighted Modi’s initiatives for farmers, including the formation of National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL) and National Cooperative Organics Limited (NCOL), designed to support farmers in exports and organic farming respectively.
He concluded by stating, “This is not just about turmeric. It’s about honouring the commitment made to our farmers and delivering on it with full sincerity.”
