New Delhi, 28th June: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah has expressed immense happiness on Bharat being designated as the host country for the prestigious 2029 World Police and Fire Games, calling it a “moment of great pride for every citizen.”

Taking to social media platform X, Shri Shah stated, “It is a moment of great pride for every citizen, as Bharat has been designated as the host country for the prestigious 2029 World Police and Fire Games. Bharat winning the bid is global recognition of our sprawling sports infrastructure built under the leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi. Ahmedabad being selected as the venue is a testament to the city’s rising stature as a sporting destination.”

The World Police and Fire Games, held biennially since 1985, bring together active and retired personnel from police, fire, emergency, disaster services, and first responder agencies to compete in more than 50 sporting disciplines. With 20 editions held so far—primarily across the USA, Canada, Europe, the UK, and once in China—India’s selection to host the 21st edition marks a new milestone in the nation’s sporting history.

India’s police personnel have been competing in the Games since 2007, beginning with the Adelaide edition. Over the past eight editions, the Indian police contingent has won over 1,400 medals, including 343 medals (Gold-224, Silver-82, Bronze-37) at the most recent Games held in Winnipeg, Canada in 2023.

The Indian team for these global games is selected based on the annual All India Police Games, organised under the aegis of the All India Police Sports Control Board (AIPSCB)—the apex body overseeing police sports, comprising 53 member organisations from CAPFs, state police forces, and other security agencies. The AIPSCB conducts 40 national-level police sports competitions annually, and gold medalists from these events form the core of India’s contingent for the World Police and Fire Games.

The announcement underscores the growing recognition of India’s global sports infrastructure and aligns with the country’s broader goals of soft diplomacy and international engagement through sport. Ahmedabad’s selection as the host city reinforces its emergence as a national hub for international sports events, following a series of high-profile tournaments and venue upgrades in recent years.

The 2029 Games are expected to further strengthen India’s international image, foster global camaraderie among first responders, and inspire a new generation of uniformed sports talent across the country.
