Mumbai, 26th June: In a landmark move, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday announced a substantial reduction in electricity tariffs across the state, marking the first such initiative in Maharashtra’s history. According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), electricity rates will be cut by 10 per cent in the first year, with a cumulative 26 per cent reduction phased over the next five years.

“Good news on electricity tariffs! For the first time in the State’s history, electricity tariffs will be reduced,” Fadnavis said in a post on X. He credited the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) for approving the proposal submitted by MSEDCL to reduce electricity rates. “Previously, petitions used to be filed for tariff hikes of around 10 per cent, but this time, a petition was filed for a reduction — benefitting domestic, industrial, and commercial consumers alike,” he added.

The state government highlighted that nearly 70 per cent of electricity consumers in Maharashtra use less than 100 units per month, making them the primary beneficiaries of this tariff relief.

The Chief Minister also stated that work under the Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana 2.0, a solar power scheme aimed at supporting agricultural electricity needs, has begun on a war footing. This initiative is expected to further strengthen the state’s renewable energy portfolio and reduce dependency on conventional sources.

In the same announcement, Fadnavis turned attention to infrastructure, highlighting the ambitious Vadhavan Port project. “We are building Vadhavan Port, which will be three times bigger than the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, the largest port of our country that handles 60 per cent of our container traffic. The Prime Minister laid the foundation of Vadhavan Port. Due to this, Maharashtra is emerging as a magnet for industry and logistics in the country,” he said.

The twin announcements — one delivering immediate economic relief to consumers and the other promising long-term industrial growth — come at a critical time for Maharashtra as the state gears up for major economic and infrastructure expansions.
