New Delhi, 23rd June: President of India Droupadi Murmu addressed the National Students’ Convocation of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) in New Delhi on Monday, highlighting the crucial role of cost and management accountants in India’s economic transformation and sustainable development.
In her keynote address, the President said, “Throughout our history, accountants have enjoyed high esteem in our society because accounting and accountability are deeply connected. We value accountability, and that is why we attach special significance to accounting.”
Reflecting on the legacy and evolution of the ICMAI, President Murmu noted that the institute—established in 1944—has not only witnessed but actively contributed to India’s post-independence economic rise. “ICMAI has played a vital role behind the scenes in making India one of the strongest economies in the world. Its contributions, though often outside the limelight, are well recognised by experts in economic and corporate history,” she said.
The President acknowledged the growing importance of Cost and Management Accountants (CMAs), stating that their role has expanded from factory floors to corporate boardrooms, influencing strategic decisions and shaping efficient economic policies. She added that the ICMAI has been a trusted partner for policymakers, offering support to central and state governments and various institutions by developing cost-efficient strategies and manuals.
Touching on the global climate crisis, President Murmu emphasised the growing relevance of CMAs in promoting sustainable business practices. “Sustainability is no longer a slogan; it has become a necessity. Corporates must now account for environmental costs. CMAs, with their skills, can bring about a meaningful change for the future of the planet,” she stressed.
In her message to graduating students, the President urged them to embrace responsibilities that go beyond traditional financial accounting. “As cost accountants, you are uniquely positioned to contribute to India’s goal of becoming a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047,” she said, expressing confidence that their education at ICMAI will empower them to become not just successful professionals but also committed nation-builders.
The convocation saw enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and professionals, celebrating the next generation of cost accountants who are set to play a pivotal role in India’s development journey.
