Khagaria, 23rd June: In a major stride toward modernising India’s grain storage system, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Monday inaugurated a 50,000 metric tonnes capacity state-of-the-art grain silo in Bihar’s Khagaria. The facility, developed at a cost of ₹150 crore, is part of the Food Corporation of India’s (FCI) broader initiative to ensure food security, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve operational efficiency.

Speaking at the event, Mr Joshi highlighted the advantages of modern silo storage over conventional godowns. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisions robust storage infrastructure that occupies less space and delivers better efficiency. These steel silos are fully automatic, eliminating human interference and preventing grain theft or quality tampering,” he said.

He noted that the current grain loss is only 0.2 per cent, a significant improvement over traditional storage methods.

The inauguration ceremony was also attended by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha. The new silos are expected to serve as a key milestone in India’s journey toward a secure and self-reliant food ecosystem.

Unlike traditional warehouses, these modern silos operate under controlled atmospheric conditions with mechanised systems for grain loading and unloading. Requiring only one-third the space of godowns, they offer better preservation, longer shelf life, and reduced grain wastage. When designated as mandi yards, they also provide farmers with direct market access, thereby strengthening the agricultural value chain.

Besides enhancing food security, the project is expected to generate local employment and contribute to Bihar’s economic development.
