Bengaluru, 21st June: An IndiGo flight from Guwahati to Chennai with 168 passengers on board made an emergency landing at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport on Thursday evening after pilots issued a distress ‘mayday’ call citing critically low fuel, sources confirmed.
The flight landed safely at 8:20 pm, thanks to swift response from the airport’s Air Traffic Control (ATC) and emergency services. “After receiving the mayday call, medical and fire teams were mobilised immediately,” a senior airport official said.
The incident comes just a week after a tragic crash involving an Air India Dreamliner in Ahmedabad. The Boeing 787-8 had issued a mayday call before plummeting into residential buildings, resulting in a massive fireball and casualties. In contrast, the IndiGo flight averted disaster with a controlled emergency landing.
Both pilots of the IndiGo flight have been derostered pending a detailed investigation into the fuel management issue.
Adding to the carrier’s turbulent week, another IndiGo flight bound for Madurai had to turn back to Chennai mid-air on Friday due to a technical snag. The aircraft, carrying 68 passengers, landed safely, and all passengers were safely deplaned following standard safety procedures.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to launch a probe into both incidents.
