PM Modi Meets German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Discusses Strategic Partnership

Kananaskis, 18th June: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with the newly elected Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Friedrich Merz, on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, marking their first interaction since Merz assumed office in May 2025.
Prime Minister Modi congratulated Chancellor Merz on his electoral victory and assumption of office, while also expressing heartfelt gratitude for the German government’s condolences over the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad last week.
Both leaders welcomed the ongoing momentum in India-Germany ties and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including trade and investment, defence and security, sustainable development, green energy, innovation, education, and mobility. They also agreed to deepen the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, especially as it marks 25 years of robust bilateral relations.
Addressing global security concerns, the two leaders identified terrorism as a serious threat to global peace and stability. Prime Minister Modi thanked Chancellor Merz for Germany’s strong support of India’s counter-terrorism efforts and solidarity on the issue.
The discussions also included a comprehensive exchange of views on regional and international developments. Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to Chancellor Merz to visit India at a mutually convenient time.
