New Delhi, 11th June: Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh met today with Ms. Marianne Sivertsen Ness, Norway’s Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy. Their important bilateral meeting, held during the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, France, focused on key issues like sustainable fisheries, marine resource management, and the broader blue economy.

During their talks, both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to working closer on sustainable ocean governance and fisheries. This builds on the long-standing partnership between India and Norway in the fisheries sector. They discussed boosting cooperation in ocean management, promoting sustainable use of marine resources, improving data sharing, and jointly tackling challenges like overfishing and marine pollution.

Both sides agreed on how vital international cooperation is for achieving the goals of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030). They stressed the importance of sharing knowledge, building capacity, and exchanging technology. The ministers also looked for ways to expand existing India-Norway collaborations, especially in areas supporting a sustainable and inclusive blue economy.

The UNOC3, running from June 9 to 13, has brought together global leaders, scientists, policymakers, and industry representatives. Their goal is to discuss collective actions for ocean health, sustainable development, and climate resilience.

Dr. Jitendra Singh’s participation highlights India’s commitment to actively shaping the global ocean agenda. It also shows India’s dedication to protecting coastal communities and promoting sustainable livelihoods based on the ocean.

These discussions in Nice come at a time when countries worldwide are increasing efforts to balance economic growth with marine conservation. The India-Norway dialogue is seen as a positive step towards strengthening global cooperation for the long-term health of our ocean resources.
