TruAlt Bioenergy Becomes Official Fuel Retailer, Boosting India’s Biofuel Push

GG News Bureau
New Delhi, 11th June: In a major step for India’s clean energy goals, TruAlt Bioenergy Limited, the nation’s largest ethanol producer, has officially become an Oil Marketing Company (OMC). This key authorization means the company can now directly market and sell petroleum products, including petrol and diesel, across the country. More importantly, it empowers them to directly retail clean fuels like ethanol and Bio-CNG.

As an authorized OMC, TruAlt Bioenergy is committed to expanding fuel access, even to remote areas. They’ve pledged to establish at least 5% of their new fuel stations in designated rural locations, supporting the government’s aim for energy connectivity everywhere.

Expanding Footprint & Green Jobs
To kick things off, TruAlt Bioenergy plans to open over 100 strategically located fuel stations in Karnataka and Maharashtra. This network will serve both traditional fuels and next-generation blended options like ethanol and Bio-CNG. The company expects this expansion to create over 2,000 new jobs in both urban and rural areas.

Vijay Nirani, Managing Director of TruAlt Bioenergy, stated, “Becoming an OMC is a defining step for TruAlt Bioenergy. It allows us to directly meet India’s evolving fuel needs while speeding up the move to cleaner energy. While we’ll offer conventional fuels, our main focus will be integrating biofuels and reaching more rural communities.”

Nirani highlighted their commitment to farmers: “Farmers are central to our model. By directly sourcing agri-residue and biomass from rural areas, we’re creating value at the grassroots. This powers clean energy solutions like ethanol and Bio-CNG. It’s a circular approach—from farm to fuel and back to farm—that restores soil health and brings wealth to farmers, making sustainability economically empowering.”

TruAlt Bioenergy currently holds a 7% market share in molasses-based ethanol and contributes 3.7% to India’s total ethanol supply.

Fueling India’s Mobility and Transition
India saw its highest-ever petroleum product consumption in FY 2024-25, reaching 239.5 million metric tonnes (MMT). This growth was driven by a 7.5% increase in petrol use and an 8.9% rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF), alongside steady gains in LPG and diesel. A notable shift is the diesel-to-petrol ratio dropping from 3.6 to 2.3, indicating changing consumer preferences.

“With over 2.5 crore cars sold annually—more than the population of many countries—India’s demand for mobility is growing at an extraordinary pace,” Mr. Nirani noted. “This is our chance to build a retail network that not only fuels today’s growth but also powers the transition to a cleaner, smarter, and more purpose-driven mobility ecosystem.”
