New Delhi, 9th June: A Delhi court on Monday allowed Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, to make a one-time phone call to his family. The call will be conducted under strict supervision by Tihar jail authorities and in line with established prison protocols.

Rana, a Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman, made the request on May 27, seeking permission to speak with his family. The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing his involvement in the 2008 attacks, granted approval for this limited communication. The Patiala House Court has also directed Tihar officials to file a detailed report on the possibility of allowing Rana regular phone calls in accordance with jail rules.

Additionally, the court has sought a comprehensive health report on Rana within 10 days.

The 64-year-old was extradited to India following a decision by the United States Supreme Court on April 4, which rejected his plea against extradition. He is currently in NIA custody in Delhi.

Rana is a known associate of David Coleman Headley, alias Daood Gilani, a key conspirator in the 26/11 attacks. Authorities allege that Rana conspired with Headley and members of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami (HUJI), and other Pakistan-based operatives in orchestrating the deadly assault on Mumbai.

The November 2008 attacks lasted nearly 60 hours and left 166 people dead. The attackers targeted major landmarks, including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Oberoi Trident Hotel, and Nariman House, after entering India via sea.
