Rajiv Gandhi Mortgaged National Pride in 1985 Nuclear Deal with Pak: BJP MP Nishikant Dubey

GG News Bureau
New Delhi, 7th June: BJP Member of Parliament Dr Nishikant Dubey has stirred controversy with a sharp allegation against former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, claiming that he compromised India’s sovereignty by entering a nuclear agreement with Pakistan under U.S. pressure.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Dubey wrote:”Rajiv Gandhi too signed a nuclear deal on December 17, 1985, with Pakistan’s President General Zia by mortgaging India’s pride and honour before the U.S., surrendering our national dignity — the documents exist.”

The post refers to a lesser-known meeting between Rajiv Gandhi and General Zia-ul-Haq during the Cold War era, when the United States was deeply involved in South Asia, primarily to counter Soviet influence in Afghanistan. At the time, both India and Pakistan were under increasing international scrutiny over their nuclear ambitions.

Dubey’s remarks seem to be a response to the Congress party’s recent criticism of the Modi government’s foreign policy moves. By invoking the 1985 alleged deal, Dubey seeks to highlight what he calls the Congress’s history of making “compromises” under external pressure.

No immediate response has been issued by the Congress party.

Dubey, a vocal BJP MP from Godda in Jharkhand, has often targeted past Congress regimes, especially on issues related to national security and foreign policy.
