New Delhi, 5th June: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday planted a ‘sindoor’ sapling at his residence, a gift from a group of courageous women who had displayed remarkable bravery during the 1971 war. The ceremony took place at his 7, Lok Kalyan Marg residence on Thursday.
The planting of the sindoor sapling is widely seen as a symbolic nod to the recent Operation Sindoor, India’s military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Speaking on social media platform X, PM Modi described the sapling as a “strong symbol of the valour and inspiration of women of the country.”
During his recent visit to Kutch in Gujarat, the Prime Minister met these brave women who presented him with the saplings. Touched by their gesture, he pledged to plant the sapling at his residence as a mark of respect and remembrance.
The choice of sindoor—a vermilion powder traditionally applied by married Hindu women—carries deep cultural and religious significance, symbolizing marital bonds and dedication. The naming of Operation Sindoor was intended to underscore India’s resolve to avenge the targeted killings of men by terrorists based on religious profiling.
In a video message shared on X, PM Modi called for nations worldwide to rise above self-interest in order to protect the global climate. He highlighted that this year’s World Environment Day theme is ending plastic pollution, a cause India has been actively working on for several years.
PM Modi also spoke about Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), which encourages mindful resource use and sustainable living, stating that it is evolving into a global public movement. He noted that millions have embraced the mantra of “reduce, reuse and recycle” in their daily lives.
In his post, the Prime Minister urged citizens to deepen their commitment to environmental protection and overcoming challenges. “I also compliment all those working at the grassroots to make our environment greener and better,” he added.
