Kolar, 4th June: In a deeply disturbing incident, a 37-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping and murdering an 80-year-old woman in Srinivasapura town of Karnataka’s Kolar district. The crime has sent shockwaves across the region, drawing public outrage and calls for swift justice.
The accused, identified as Baba Jaan, a resident of Gaffar Khan Mohalla in Srinivasapura, is currently in judicial custody. According to police officials, the victim’s body was discovered on Monday evening near a garage adjacent to an open field along Mulbagal Road.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the elderly woman had been raped and then strangled to death. She had left her home two days earlier, informing her family that she was going to visit a church in Srinivasapura.
Police said the woman stayed in the town for two days. On Monday evening, as she waited for a bus to return home, she was allegedly approached by the accused. After confirming she was alone, he reportedly carried her to an isolated location, where he brutally assaulted and murdered her. He then stole ₹15,000 from her bag.
The breakthrough came after police obtained CCTV footage from a nearby shop, which showed the accused lifting the elderly woman and carrying her away. Shockingly, the accused later returned to the crime scene, possibly to observe the police investigation. Alert officers noticed his suspicious behavior and apprehended him on the spot.
During interrogation, Baba Jaan confessed to raping and killing the woman with the intention of robbing her money and jewellery, police said. The victim’s family, devastated by the brutal crime, has demanded the harshest punishment for the accused, calling for capital punishment.
This is the second such case reported in Karnataka within a year. On August 21, 2024, a 28-year-old labourer was arrested by Chintamani police for allegedly sexually assaulting a 65-year-old woman on the premises of a government hospital.
Police have assured a thorough investigation and swift legal action. Further details are awaited as the case progresses.
